One of the picturesque hill stations of Himachal Pradesh, Manali is located at a distance of 40 km from Kullu and 521 km from state capital of India, Delhi. One of the preferred tourist destinations of Himachal Pradesh, Manali offers an excellent opportunity for adventurous sports activities like trekking, mountaineering and river rafting. Apart from the these, tourists can travel to Manali to witness century old temples and monasteries like Hadimba temple, Manu temple and the Gadhan Thekchhokling monastery. The small town was the beginning of an ancient trade route to Ladakh and, from there, over the Karakoram Pass on to Yarkand and Khotan in the Tarim Basin.
While planning a tour to Manali, keep in mind the climatic condition of the region, an ideal time for the tour would be mid-May to June and September to November. Monsoon months are to be avoided because of fear of landslides.
Manali derived its name from Manavalaya i.e. the abode of Manu. According to myth, Manu the divine law-giver, was the only survivor of the Mahajal Pralay – the great flood – and is said to have fathered the human race. The valley of gods, as the Kullu valley has come to be known, is perhaps the most delightful region in the western Himalayas. The ancient Hindus regarded it as the furthest limit of human habitation – Kulantapitha, and its original name finds mention in the epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata as well as Vishnu Purana. The actual myth is:
One day, Vaivasvata, the seventh incarnation of Manu found a tiny fish in his bathing water. The fish told him to look after it with devotion for one day it would do him a great service. Manu cared for the fish till it grew huge and he released it into the sea. The the fish warned Manu of an impending deluge when the entire world would be submerged and bade him to build a boat that could save humanity. When the flood came. Vaivasvata and the Seven Sages were towed to safety by Matsya the fish (regarded as the first avatara of Lord Vishnu).

* Kothi – This is a quiet but picturesque spot, at the foot of the Rohtang pass, 12 km away Manali town, situated on the Lahaul-Spiti Leh Highway. It offers a magnificent view of the snow-capped peaks and glaciers and an awe inspiring gorge below Kothi, where for more than a kilometre the river Beas flows through a deep gorge, almost a subterranean passage, 30 metres or more in depth, and the cliffs which flank both sides of the canyon are a favourite haunt for rock pigeons.
* Van Vihar: This is just off the Mall with pathways between towering deodhars and also leads to a boating pond.
* Tibetan Market and Mall: The Tibetan Market is an interesting cluster of shops. Nice to browse around for knick knacks, handicrafts and imported goods. Located on the Mall. The Mall also has other shops selling local handicrafts and clothes. It also has some good restaurants. Buses, taxis and autos are easily available from the Mall for local sightseeing or excursions.
* Rohtang Pass – Situated at an altitude of 3979 mtrs above sea level and 51 kms outside Manali is the mighty Rohtang Pass – the gateway to Lahaul-Spiti valley. Open for just about four months a year, it affords a wide panoramic view of the mountains. Here one sees the majesty of the mountains at its height and splendour. At the top of the pass the air seems to glitter against the snow as you look down over herringboned ridges into the Lahaul valley. There is the beautiful Dashohar Lake left of the pass. A few km away from the pass is the Sonapani glacier and slightly to the left are the twin peaks of the Gaypan-jagged pyramid of rock, snow streaked and snow crowned peaks.
* Solang Valley – 13 kms outside Manali is the Solang Valley, offering spectacular views of the snow-clad mountains and the glaciers all around. Solang is the venue for paragliding and the annual skiing courses. The plateau is frequently used for holding camps by trekking enthusiasts.
* Rahla Falls: 2 km from Kothi. Here the river Beas hurtles down from a height of about 50 metres. Charming spot for picnics.
* Manali Sanctuary: A bridle path from the Manali log huts goes past the Dhoongri Temple and wanders into the dense deodar, kail, horse chestnut, walnut and maple forest that form a part of this sanctuary. Camping overnight in tents at Lambadug or Galiani Thatch is possible. You can see various animals such as Musk deer, monal and brown bear over here.
* Gadhan Takechokling Gumfa : Close to Tibetan Monastery, Gadhan Takechokling Gumfa is another tourist spot which was constructed in 1969. The Lakhang or the shrine hall of the monastery was built by the contributions of local people. The Gadhan Takechokling Gumfa has the idol of Shakyamuni.
* Jagatsukh Temple – About 6 km from Manali is the famous Shiva Temple in “shikara” style and nearby is the old and interesting Devi Sharvali Temple.
* Roerich Art Gallery – In Naggar, the museum, houses a collection of the paintings by the Russian artist. It is located in a grove of deodhars and has lovely views all around. Naggar is very serene and picturesque.
* Hadimba Temple – Also known as the Doongri Temple, this four-tiered pagoda-like wooden temple stands in a clearing amid tall and stately deodar trees and has beautiful carvings on its ornamental door. Dedicated to Hadimba, the wife of Bhim, this temple is the venue for an annual fair held during May. Built in 1553 and with a superbly crafted four tiered pagoda roof. It is famous for its exquisitely carved doorway.
* Vashist Spring – Across the Beas river, about 3 km away from Manali, at an altitude of 1,982 meters (6,200 feet), are the natural sulphur springs. There are old temples dedicated to the sage Vashishth and to Lord Rama. The village itself is perched on a steep hillside across the river Beas.
* Tibetan Monastery – These are new and colorful (3 of them). A pleasant place to visit. Two are located in the town and one at Aleo on the left bank of Beas river.
* Beas Kund – The tiny roundish igloo like stone hut shelters the Beas Kund, the very source of the holy river Beas. Water flows at the source of the river likfe a spring, so clear and icy cold that it almost numbs the fingers. All around is the rocky terrain with very little vegetation. The great rishi, Vyas performed “Tapa” here during the Mahabharat times.
* Manikaran: 85 km from Manali and 45 km from Kullu, lies in the Parvati Valley, the holy pilgrimage place of Manikaran. Here icy cold waters of the Parvati river co-exists with boiling water side-by-side. The hot water springs are reputed for their healing properties.
* Triloknath: Located in the Pattan Valley, its an important pilgrimage centre. Noted for its temple dedicated to six armed statue of Avalokiteshwara Bodhisattva.
* Arjun Gufa (Arjun Cave): 4kms. from Manali towards Naggar, the cave is situated near Prini village 1km. above the road where Arjun had meditated. This is good 1/2 a day excursion with a beautiful view of the striking mountains.
* Nehru Kund: 5 kms. on National Highway to Leh,a natural spring of cold clear water named after Pt. Jwahar Lal Nehru, who used to drink water from this spring during his stay in Manali. This spring is believed to originate from the Bhrigu lake situated high-up in the mountains.

Things to do: Manali is famous for adventure sports like skiing, hiking, mountaineering, para gliding, rafting, trekking, kayaking, and mountain biking.

Skiing: 13 km from Manali, Solang Valley has good skiing slopes equipped with an excellent lift. A splendid valley between Manali and Kothi, it also offers views of the glaciers and snow-capped mountain peaks. Season: January – March. Gulaba slopes also provide good skiing. Facilities for skiing are available at Solang Nullah (January-March) and Rohtang La (during summer). The Mountaineering Institute at Solang Nullah is a good training institute.

Trekking: There are several good hikes from Manali. The 12 km hike up the western banks of the Beas to the Solang Valley is noteworthy. Lama Dugh meadow is a 6 km hike up to the Manalsu Nala, west of Manali town. Another great trek is from Solang Valley to Dhundhi onto Dussar Lake and terminating at Manali (a good 5 day trek)

Whitewater River Rafting: Many organized adventure companies organise rafting along the River Beas between the stretch from Manali to Aut. The points where the rafting trips start from are Raison and Mohal. Season: May to mid June.

Angling and Fishing: River Beas is said to abound with trout and salmon.

Paragliding – Organized by the local adventure companies in the summers in Solang Valley.

How to get there:
By Air: Manali has no airport of its own. The nearest one Bhuntas is around 10 km south of Kullu town and about 50 km from Manali.
By Train: Chandigarh, about 280 km away and Joginder Nagar, about 200 km away.
By Road: Manali is well connected by road to Delhi through NH-21 which goes on to Leh and is the world’s highest motorable road.

Palampur is the tea capital of northwest India. Palampur is set on the rising slopes of Kangra Valley before they merge with the Dhauladhar ranges. Countless streams and brooks criss-crosses the landscape and in their intricate mesh, hold tea gardens and rice paddies. The town has derived its name from the local word “pulum’, meaning lots of water. Palampur was a part of the local Sikh kingdom and later on came under the British rule. This hill station is not only known for its numerous tea gardens and paddy fields but it also known for its colonial architecture and temples. Palampur and places around it are popular for adventure sports like hang-gliding and trekking. The place is an example of a beautiful location not yet spoilt by tourists. Some time here is good for relaxing and stress-relieving.

Things to do:

Trekking: Several trek routes lead out of Palampur, and given the close presence of the Dhauladhar Mountains, many of these treks are over the mountains and towards the town of Chamba. Treks of 5-8 days duration are viable from May to October. Some of the interesting treks from Palampur include Palampur to Holi over the Shingar pass, Palampur to Dharamsala via Indrahar Pass and Baijnath to Manali over the Thamsar pass.
Hang/Paragliding: Near Palampur, you have both Bir and Billing. Bir is twenty-eight kilometers from Palampur and has numerous Buddhist monuments and is famous for its Tibetan handicrafts (and is also one of the main landing points for the hang-gliders and para-gliders). The town of Billing, which is 42 km from Palampur and 14 km from Bir, is an important launching point for hang-gliding.
Fishing: There are ample opportunities for the angler between 1st March to 1st June and 1st September to end of October for Mahaseer fishing in and around Dehra Gopipur, Nadaun and Pong Dam.

Neughal Khad: Close to the Bundelmata temple, there is a 300-metre-wide chasm through which the Neugal stream flows and is a great view.
Andretta: The charming village, spread below the thickly wooded hill and sprawling plains of the Kangra Valley was once the home of the famous painter Sardar Sobha Singh. Now Andretta is a centre for various artistic activities such as pottery and is just 13-km away from Palampur.
Shobha Singh’s Art Gallery: It is situated in Andhretta which is 13 km. from town.
The Factory: At the very start of town the tea factory of the co-operative society, offers an insight to the processing of Kangra tea.
Baijnath: Noted for it’s ancient temple, which was built in 804 A.D. and dedicated to Shiva Vaidyanatha. The linga enshrined in its sanctum is one of the 12 jyotirlingas in the country. Every year during the Shivratri fair, thousands of pilgrims descend on Baijnath for the colourful fair and festivities. It is 16-km from Palampur and 56-km from Dharamsala. It is a must see if you are coming to Palampur.
Bir and Billing: Sheltered by the mountains and surrounded by tea gardens, Bir serves as a landing ground for hang & Para gliders as well as known for it’s Buddhist monasteries and Tibetan handicrafts. One of the best aero-sports sites in the world, Billing is 14-km from Bir. The mountain ranges set like an amphitheatre, offer opportunities for high altitude and cross-country flying for more than 200-km.
Chamunda Devi: The famous temple dedicated to the goddess Chamunda is 25-kms away from Plampur and Yatri Niwas here provides an excellent accommodation for the visitors. The temple is a place that attracts a huge number of devotees, especially during religious festivities.
Gopalpur: Situated 13-km away from the town, Gopalpur consists of a mini zoo.
Tea Factory: The cooperative society tea factory provides an insight to the processing of Kangra Tea, and you can also see the various tea gardens, and drive on the road through the tea gardens. With less traffic, it is a very calming influence.
Temple of Bundelmata: Walk through tea gardens and open fields or drive to reach this temple built about five centuries ago.
Al-Hilal: A few kilometers from the city of Palampur is Al-Hilal, a place of unparalleled charm. During the conquests of Kangra by Maharaja Renjit Singh, this place was a military bastion.
Neugal Khad: ( 2 km. from town.) Neugal Khad provides a fine view of the Dhauladhar range. It is roaring in the rainy season and gurgling all the year round. Himachal Tourism cafe provides food and a fine view from its restaurant.
Kangra Fort (27 km): The most important fort of the region, it is enclosed by high ramparts and its walls have a circumference of approximately 4 km. It was built about 1,000 years ago on the confluence of the Banganga and Manjhi rivers. Its various gates, shrines end remains of the old palaces are noteworthy.
Sujanpur Tira: 42 km from Palampur situated on the banks of foaming Beas, the historical town Sujanpur Tira (Tira mean palace) was built by Raja Sandra Chand, who had ascended to the throne when only ten years of age. The Tira Palace was the winter residence of Sansar Chand and the Alampur palace on the other side of the Beas was his summer resort.

Kullu is the capital town of the Kullu District, in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is located on the banks of the Beas River in the Kullu Valley about ten kilometres north of the airport at Bhuntar. Kullu is more famous when twinned along with Manali to form the Kullu-Manali tourist destination.

Historical information: Kullu was once known as Kulanthpitha – `the end of the habitable world`. The earliest recorded information of this area goes back to 1st century AD, when this valley began to be inhabited. In the medieval period, Kullu and the area around it was ruled by a number of local rulers. The Kullu valley was isolated from other parts of the country for many centuries until it came under British rule. Kullu got its first motorable access only after Independence. The long centuries of seclusion have however allowed the area to retain a considerable measure of its traditional charm.

The town of Kullu has been a centre of faith. Raja Jagat Singh in 17th century installed here an idol of Lord Raghunathji brought from Ayodhya. He positioned the idol on his throne as a mark of his penance, which became the presiding deity of the Kullu valley. Kullu is known for the multihued Dussehra festival. To pay homage to the reigning deity, Raghunathji, decorated palanquins and processions convey Gods and Goddesses from temples all over the valley to Kullu.

A nature’s paradise on earth, Kullu is often described as the ‘Silver valley’ of Himachal Pradesh, which is located at a distance of 40 km from Manali and 570 km from state capital of India, Delhi. Located in between Dhauladhar Ranges and Pir Pamjal Ranges of Indian Himalaya, Kullu is one of the famous holiday destinations of Himachal Pradesh. Raghunath Temple: In the 17th century, Raja Jagat Singh of Kullu wanted to atone for a sin committed by him, and for this purpose, he sent a senior courtier to Ayodhya for a statue of Lord Raghunath – Lord Rama. This temple was built by Raja Jagat Singh to house the image and is now very famous, attracting many many devotees.

Bijli Mahadev Temple: This temple is much known for its 20-meter high rod that occasionally draws lightning, which shatters the ‘Shivalinga’ and lit the building. Shoja: At 2692 m, this is a vantage point for a complete panorama of the Kullu area – snow peaks and valleys, meadows and forests, rivers and streams.

Basheshwar Mahadev Temple, Bajaura: This temple is renowned for its intricate stone carvings.

Deo Tibba: As per mythology, Arjuna performed Tapa at this temple under the guidance of Maharashi Vyas to get the powerful Pasupata Astra from Indra. Also known as Indralika, Deo Tibba is 2,953 metres (9,687 ft.) high.

Jagatsukh: Situated on the left bank, between Nagar and Manali, Jagatsukh is the most ancient Kullu capital. The small shrine of Gaurishankar and the larger chalet-roofed temple to the goddess Sandhya Devi is there.

Naggar: For 1400 years this was the capital of Kullu. Its 16th century stone and wood castle is now a hotel run by Himachal Tourism. Here, a gallery houses the paintings of the Russian artist, Nicholas Roerich. Naggar also has other old shrines.

Other Attractions

Kullu Dussehra: When Dussehra celebrations come to an end in the rest of the country, they begin at Kullu. Over 600 local deities come to pay homage to Lord Raghunath. This is a time when the valley is at its colourful best.

The river Beas offers excellent opportunities for white water rafting.

Fishing and Adventure: The Kullu valley has numerous places for trout fishing. These include Katrain, Raison, Kasol and Naggar, then along the river Tirthan near Larji, in the Sainj Valley and in the Hurla khud. Angling & Fishing in Kullu:

Raison – This place by the banks of the Beas-and on the Kullu-Manali Highway is the ideal spot for adventure and holiday. Himachal Tourism runs a camping site here.

Kasol: Kasol is an idyllic holiday destination. Kasol comprise a glade by the banks of the river Parvati. This place is famous for trout fishing.

Bathad: Bathad lies at a distance of 67-kilometer. Bathad is a charming location, approachable by road from Kullu. It is famous for pastimes such as trout fishing, hunting, and beautiful sites.

Katrain: Katrain falls on the midpoint of Kullu-Manali road. Katrain is very famous for bee keeping and trout fishing.

Banjar: At an altitude of 1,534m (5,000 ft.) Banjar is famous for its panoramic beauty and trout fishing in river Tirtham. It is about 58-km from Kullu.

Largi: 34-km south of Kulu via Aut, Largi is a small hamlet. Largi offers the best trout fishing and scenic beauty in the valley.

More adventure

Kullu Valley is known all over the World for Heliskiing.This sport has been conveniently arranged near Bhrigu peaks in the Hamta pass and Solang Nala too is another convenient place for the furtherance of this high on-adrenaline-sport. River Beas and its thunderous gushes are also perfect places for river rafting in certain stretches.

Trekking in Kullu

The valley is the nucleus of several trek routes. Some major ones are over the Chanderkhani Pass to Malana and Pin Parbati Pass to Sarahan. The Jalora Pass lies 5-km beyond Shoja and gives access to the outer Seraj region of the Kullu Valley. From Chamba to Udaipur (Lahaul) over Sach Pass, can be completed by trekkers within a day span of nine or ten days.

How to reach Kullu:

By Air: The airport at Bhuntar is 10 km from Kullu, where taxis and buses are available.

By Road: By road, the distance from Delhi via Mandi is 530 km and from Shimla this is 240 km. From Delhi and Shimla, luxury buses ply to Kullu. The main bus stand is by river in the northern area of the town.

By Rail: The closest narrow guage railhead is at Jogindemagar, 95 km from Kullu.

Centuries ago, when man first began to look up at the sky and wonder what lay above him, he’s been captive to an inherent urge to fly- to soar above and see what the earth looks like from way up there. He has used balloons, developed flight, spacecraft, and so on. But the easiest way to fly (and probably the cheapest) is through the adventure sports of hang-gliding and para-gliding. In India, Himachal Pradesh is one of the centers of these sports. And inside Himachal, a small town near Palampur is one of the centers.
Called Billing, this small adventure village is one of the centers of hang-gliding in India, and has become extremely famous in the recent past. The bald peak of Billing, above the Buddhist monastery of Bir in Kangra, has been the venue for five national and three international hang-gliding rallies since 1984. The site is perfect for para-gliding too. Its topography makes it the most suited venue for future world paragliding championships. Billing in Himachal Pradesh is located at 8,500 feet in the Kangra valley. The massive Dhauladar mountain range and the Kangra valley below with its panoramic views offer opportunities for high altitude ‘up and down’ and ‘cross-country’ flying for more than 200-km.

Billing is by far and away Himachal’s most prominent site for hang gliding and parasailing. It offers nearly a 100 km of clear, beautiful countryside where gliding is possible, and the Aero Sports Club at nearby Bir is a good place to go for assistance of any kind. Up to Bir town you can travel by any vehicle. The 14 km distance from Bir to billing is actually a rock road, whose rock cutting was done way back in 1962. It is advisable that this distance be covered either by foot or if by a vehicle then Gypsy or the Mahindra which are suitable for this terrain.

What is hang-gliding ? In Hang Gliding, you are suspended by a harness from a large type of a kite called a Hang Glider. Hang-gliding requires some training and handling the glider is tougher than handling the equipment using in para-gliding.
What is Para-Gliding? Para Gliding is another adventure sport that has caught the fancy of the people al over the world. The credit of introducing Para Gliding goes to Dr Francis Rogalo who constructed a flexible Delta Kite for gliding. But, the sport gained popularity only in early 80′s. It is lighter and easier than Hand Gliding and safer than Hang Gliding. This sport was introduced in India in 1991-92, when some foreign visiting pilots decided to explore flying possibilities in the Kullu Valley. The sport with its self-advertising nature soon charmed the Valley adventure lovers, who had till then been involved in skiing, trekking and rock climbing.

Bir has Buddhist Monasteries that are worth visiting. Fine Tibetan handi craft are also produced here. Bir, surrounded by tea gardens and an amphitheater of low hills, is an ideal landing around for para-gliders. Bir is famous for an annual fair, which is related to Holi festival. During the festival, locals come dressed in their best clothes and dance and sing joyously.

What to carry:
Warm clothing and a windcheater are a must, as the higher you rise, the lower the temperature falls, and it can get quite cold. Make sure you’re wearing sturdy ankle-support shoes, long trousers, and gloves. A pair of sunglasses and a liberal splash of suntan lotion are highly recommended too. You should also carry your own bedding, medicines, mineral water, etc. Smaller and more inaccessible sites such as Billing need not have the comfort of even small towns. The best time for hang gliding is May-June and September-October.

Accommodation:
Basic accommodation is available at Bir and Chaughan Tibetan colony. The facilities are limited so its better to make arrangements in advance especially during season.
For Billing, fiberglass tents and tented accommodation can be arranged through the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation.

Getting there:
Air: Kangra has its own domestic airport at Guggal, which is 7km away from Kangra town and about 40 km from Palampur. Kangra airport is connected to Pathankot and Delhi.
Rail : Pathankot is the nearest railhead. There is an overnight train from Delhi to Pathankot. From Pathankot Palampur is connected by narrow guage railway. One can also take a bus or taxi to Bir from Pathankot.
Road: There are ordinary, semi deluxe or deluxe buses available from Delhi and other major towns of Himachal Pradesh to Dharamsala, Palampur, Baijnath, Jogindernagar or Mandi (all of them relatively close to Bir)

Dharamsala is a charming little hill station town located in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, developed in the nineteenth century by the British. Dharamsala literally means the Holy Refuge, as it is the place where a large number of Tibetan people migrated here after the annexation of Tibet by China in 1959. Since then it became a major spiritual centre for Tibetan people and the Buddhist community. Its a salubrious climate with a magnificent backdrop of the Dhauladhar ranges makes it one of the popular hill stations in India.
Dharamshala is the district hqr. of Kangra district. This is a hill station lying on the spur of the Dhauladhar range about 18kms. north east of Kangra town. The hill station is heavily wooded with oak and conifer trees with snow capped mountains enfolding three sides of the town while the valley stretches in front. The snow line is perhaps more easily accessible at Dharamshala than at any other hill resort and it is possible to trek to snow point after an early morning’s start. Dharamsala is surrounded by deodhar forests and provides a superb view of the great granite mountains that almost cover the town.
It is divided into two distinct parts. Lower Dharamshala has civil offices and business establishments with courts, and Kotwali Bazar. Upper Dharamshala compose of places with names which bear witness to its history like McLeod Ganj and Forsythe Ganj. Since 1960, when it became a temporary hqrs. of His Holiness The Dalai Lama, Dharamshala has risen to international fame as “The Little Lhasa in India”.

Things to do:
Trekking: An easy trek is from Dharamsala, via Bhagsunath (11 km) to Triund (9 km, 2,800 m) and back to Dharmshala (17 km). A one day extension at Triund opens possibilities of a climb upto the meadows. To add more challenge to this trek is a week-long trek crossing the Dhauladhar range over the 4,300 m high Indrahar pass into Chamba district.
Shorter walks are a 2 kms long walk to Bhagsung – 3 kms to Dharamkot – 8 kms to Triund – 5 kms to Snow Line of Ilaqa Got.
Hang-gliding: Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh is an attractive site for hang gliding. The hilly environs with wide landscapes provide an ideal opportunities for hang gliding specially as the thermal updrafts in the area are conducive.
Learning the Ancient Art of Yoga and Meditation in the Various Centres located 12 kms from Dharamshala. Several meditation centres have mushroomed here due to the calm and scenic location. For Yoga lessons, head for the Iyengar Himalayan Yoga center.
Fishing: In the river Beas between Nadaun and the Pong Dam. Get your angling gears ready as here you can bask a chance to fish for Mahaseer.

Places to visit:
Macleodganj – It is main place for Tibetan settlement and the residence for Dalai Lama. It is popular for its colourful Tibetan bazaars and delicious cuisines showing all aspects of Tibetan culture. It also has the school of Tibetan studies and an Institute of Performing Art. It is now one of the major centre for Tibetan Culture.
Namgyal Monastery – This was founded by the third Dalai Lama, Sonam Gyatso in 1575 and later called the Namgyal monastery or the victorious monastery. It is now an important centre for Tibetan studies in Dharamsala. It contains large gilded bronzes of Buddha, Avalokitesvara and Padmasam-bhava.
The Kangra Art Museum – It has a large collection of miniature paintings from the Kangra School of Art. It also has a collection of jewellery, woodcarving objects and traditional embroidered Kangra costumes.
Library of Tibetan Works and Archives – Located at the central administrative compound of the southern end of McLeod Ganj, the library has a good collection of original Tibetan manuscripts including some ancient texts and photographs.
Norbuligka: Dedicated towards the preservation of Tibetan arts and crafts in a centre that asks you to spend time over there. Set in the style of a Japenese garden, Norbulingka has a temple, souvenir shop and Losel Dolls Museum and a beautiful cafe, Norling. There are also metal and wood workshops where you can see people indulged in crafting.
St. John’s Church (8 kms): This Gothic style church has attractive stained glass windows. Lord Elgin, one of the few viceroys of British occupied India, to die in office, is buried here, according to his last wish, as it reminded him of his beloved native Scotland.
Triund: At the foot of the Dhaula Dhar is Triund which is an 8 km trek.
Bhagsunath Falls: At a distance of 11kms. from the market complex of Dharamshala, Bhagsunag can be approached by road. There is an old temple, and a fresh water spring. Further about 2kms. are the beautiful Bhagsunag water falls.
War Memorial (2 kms): Set amidst beautiful surroundings, this memorial is built near the entry point to Dharamshala and is dedicated to Himachali war heroes
Dal Lake: The lake lies amidst hills and stately fir trees 11kms. from Lower Dharamshala and is connected by a motorable road. It is the starting point of excursions and trekking and is located next to the Tibetan Children’s village.
Jwalamukhi Temple: Dedicated to the “Goddess Of Light”, the temple is one of the most popular Hindu temples in northern India. There is no idol of any kind as the flame is considered as a manifestation of the goddess. An eternally burning and shining blue flame emanates from the rock sanctum and is fed by the priests with the offerings of devotees.
Trilokpur: situated 41 kms. from Dharamshala and can be approached by road. The natural cave temple of Trilokpur contains stalactites and stalagamites and is dedicated to Shiva.
Geludpa Monastery: Adjoins the Dalai Lama’s monastery. Here you should see the giant statue of Buddha, Thankas and other ritual and consecrated subjects.
Chamunda Devi Temple (15 km): Not so far from the town is the famous temple with the majestic Dhaulandhars as a backdrop. It is an enchanting spot with glorious views of the mountains, the Baner Khud, Pathiar and Lahala forests.
Palampur (35 km): Palampur is a hilly town and a municipal council in Kangra district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Palampur is famous for its picturesque and snow clad mountains and tea gardens.
Pong Wild life Sanctuary (Kangra): Around 65 km from Dharamshala in the Kangra district, the Pong Lake Sanctuary makes for a good visit if you are interested in seeing animals like Nilgai, Sambar, Barking Deer, Wild Buar, Clawless Otter and Leapord. The lake is a huge drawer of Siberian Ducks during the winter season. The sanctuary covers an area of 9675 sq km and is best visited during the period of October to February.
Dehra Gopipur: Situated on the bank of the Beas; one can use Dehra as a base for different fishing areas like Pong Dam Pattan, kurn and Nadaun. There are PWD & Forest rest houses for a night stay and one can also visit the famous temple of Chintpurni from here.
Masroor: Known for its monolithic rock temples, Masroor is 15kms. south of Kangra. There are 15 rock cut temples in Indo-Aryan style and richly carved. The temples partly ruined now are profusely decorated with sculptural ornamentations , conceived in the same manner as the great temple of Kailash at Elora in Maharastra with which they bear a striking resemblance. The main temple is dedicated to Lord Ram, Lakshman and Sita.
Andretta: Situated just 13-kms away from Palampur, lies this dwelling place of artist S.Sobha Singh. It houses a gallery of some of his major works and a pottery center.
Dharamkot: (14 km. from) It is situated on the crest of a hill. This favourite picnic spot affords a panoramic view of the kangra valley and the Dhauladhar ranges. One can reach Dharamkot by a simple trek from Bhagsu. Various small restaurant type of shops are situated in the path for a quick relaxation and bevarages.
Baijnath (15 km): At a distance of 16 km from Palampur, Baijnath is a pilgrimage centres of the Hindus in Kangra Distt. Here one finds the oldest existing Shiva temple in the country, believed to have been originally built by the Pandavas close to the Binwa Khad.

How to get there:
Air: Gaggal Airport is the nearest one at a distance of 13 km.
Rail – The nearest railhead is at Pathankot, which is connected to all the major north Indian cities
Road – The hill station is well connected to all parts of Himachal Pradesh by a good motorable road network. The NH1 links it with Pathankot and Jalandhar.

Solang is a place where you go to for enjoying nature, as well as for getting some great adventure sports. If you are the adventurous sort, then the Solang valley is a great place to go to. Solang is about 1 hours drive from Manali; 13 km northwest of Manali and famous for its 300-meter ski lift. Popularly known as ‘snow point’, the valley has an extensive view of glaciers and snow capped mountains and peaks. It is a place where you get away from the city life, where there are mountains, dense forests and snowcapped peaks, and all of them seemingly your next door neighbours. In a city, with the pollution, you hardly get to see the night sky, but in a place such as Solang, the lights of a hundred thousand stars switch on automatically at nightfall. As for enjoying yourself, the towering cliffs challenge you to heights where only eagles dare.
Solang Valley itself offers some spectacular views of the famous peaks in the Kullu valley. The Solang Valley has some lush meadows, totally green and very natural. In addition, nearby is the 3963-metre high Patalsu peak from where great views of the surrounding mountain peaks can be had.
Solang is the venue of national level skiing competitions and the major attraction is the Winter Carnival held around the middle of February. The Winter Games are organised by Himachal Pradesh Government through the training institutes in collaboration with the Indian Olympic Association and the Winter Games Federation of India.
For the beginners, Solang is an ideal skiing spot with introductory slopes and ski lifts. Its ski slopes offers a paradise for skiers and offers unexpected excitement with smooth-curved ridges and gentle gradients. You get to meet people who are great at skiing, and who are provide you great training. Cross- country skiing is also practiced here. You can also do snow-boarding. These are winter sports and the best months are January-March though some years there is adequate snow till mid-April. The season then begins again in November-December. Solang has a great atmosphere and you get to know many of India’s top skiers. But there is only one slope and the ski lift is not as efficient as the one in Auli.
Ballooning can also be done in Solang Valley and the best season during summer. The cliffs offer some great chances for other adventure sports such as hang gliding and para gliding, an adventure that provides thrills. The best time to go far paragliding is from May till September as the conditions are suitable and fair winds are with you. And of course, Solang forms an integral part of many treks.
Apart from skiing, the Solang resort offers an array of special snow sports, snow sledges and snow scooters for children and women and those on the 800m-long ski run.
