The pride of Kerela and a testimony to nature’s splendour and human innovation, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the banks of the Periyar lake – an artificial lake with an area of 26 sq. km, at Thekkady. The high ranges of the Western Ghats are clothed in dense evergreen, moist deciduous forests and savannah grass lands.
The Periyar National Park was slated under the Project Tiger in the year 1972. This is the only sanctuary in India where you can have the unique experience of viewing wildlife at close quarters from the safety of a boat on the lake. The greatest attraction of Periyar, however are the herds of wild elephants that come down to the play in the lake. The main prey base of the tiger is sambar. The other prey animals of the tiger are the Indian bison and the wild boar.
The Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve offers plenty of opportunities for recreation and enjoyment. One can swim in the lake or get permits for angling that are easily available from the Forest Officer in Thekkady.

Flora & Fauna in the Periyar National Park

The deeper valleys contain tropical evergreen forest with extremely thick tree cover that even bright sunlight finds hard to penetrate. The flora here is composed mainly of marshy grasslands. The forests are a mixture of grasslands, fire-resistant low-growth vegetation, deciduous forests, semi-evergreens, and tropical evergreens. It is good to be cautious of the blood-sucking leeches that are found in plenty here.
The animals that you will find here are elephants, tigers, gaur, wild pigs, sambar, barking deer, mouse deer, dole or Indian wild dog. There are, now, an estimated 40 tigers in the Periyar national Park. Four species of primates found at Periyar are – the rare lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, Common Langur And Bonnet Macaque. The birdlife comprises of Darters, Cormorants, Kingfishers, the great Malabar Hornbill and racket-tailed Drongoes.

Special Attractions in Periyar National Park

- Periyar Lake: The Periyar Lake attracts grey heron, ibis, the great Malabar hornbill and grey hornbill.
- Kumily : Situated just 4-kms from Periyar, Kumily is a growing town where tourism is fastly catching up just like the spice trade, the major occupation of this small town.
- Cradomom Hills : Periyar and Kumily are the most convenient points from which visitors can easily explore Kerala’s beautiful Cardamom hills.
- Nature Walk : Nature tours cover habitats of various species of birds and animals and are usually 4 to 5 kilometers in length. Pass through lush green woods of evergreen and moist deciduous forests.

Poovar is like a natural wonder where different water bodies such as Lake, River, Sea and Beach meet the land. A rare find in Kerala, the southern state of India. Poovar fits the definition of an unspoiled and unexplored place, enveloped by serene backwaters, and opening out to the sea, with a bonus of a dream golden sand beach. The historical importance of Poovar lies in its strong ties with the legendary King of the erstwhile Princely State of Travancore, the great Marthanda Varma Maharaja.

Poovar weather:
Like other regions of India, Kerala enjoys a tropical climate with plenty of sunshine, with the peaceful beach resort of Poovar seeing high temperatures all-year round. Poovar Estuary Island resort has an island with a beach and the Arabian Sea beyond, an estuary giving way to a lake and subsequently, the Poovaru (river). There is a vantage point upfront with recliners from where all of them form part of one panoramic view. The island is sandy for the most part (land reclaimed and silted) and looks over to the lake on one side, the sea on the other. There are boats that ferry people from the resort to the island and the boat-jetty is operational 24 hours if prior notice is given.

Poovar is a small island about 30 Kms from Trivandrum, where the backwaters merge with the Arabian Sea. The river Neyyar also empties into the sea here, and thus, at Poovar Beach near the island, one can see the remarkable sight of river, sea, beach, backwaters, as well as lakes (formed at intervals due to the flow of water), all converging at the estuary.

Poovar is a small coastal village in the Trivandrum district of Kerala state, south India. This village is almost at the southern tip of Trivandrum and there is not much distance from here to the Kerala – Tamilnadu border. This village has a beautiful beach which attracts tourists. There are also some good tourist resorts. Poovar was a trading center of timber, sandlewood, ivory and spices. It is believed that the trading ships of King Solomon landed in a port called ‘Ophir’, which is figured out as Poovar.

We had reservations for a floating cottage, which are built on a hollow concrete base and tethered to the shoreline. However, as these cottages were shutdown in the weeks prior to our arrival due to high tides and wind, they were not ready for occupation when we arrived. They put us up in a regular room, with a hammock in the balcony for a couple of days before we shifted to the floating cottage. In hindsight, that was a good break, as I was not very impressed with the cottage, which had quite a shabby feel to it. In contrast, the rooms were extremely impressive, spacious and neat.

Located at a distance of about 16 km from Kottayam, Kumarakom is one of the most fascinating and invigorating paradise in Kerala. The beauty of this place lies in its coconut palms, never-ending paddy fields, lagoons, backwaters and of course the famous Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary on the Vembanad Lake, which attracts a variety of migratory birds and water birds. The backwaters at Kumarakom offer a variety of flora and fauna. There are many good resorts and hotels in Kumarakom that offer comfortable accommodation. Most of the resorts in Kumarakom offer recreational facilities like Ayurvedic massage, yoga, meditation, boating, fishing and swimming etc.
What is Kumarakom famous for ? Well, in a few worls, Kumarakom is extremely famous all around the world for some incredible backwaters tourism, and eco tourism. It is a good starting point to begin houseboat cruises over the scenic backwaters of the state. A well-organized house boat (needs to be cool during the summers though) cruise can be experience to cherish for lifetime. For many people, doing this once is just an invitation to do such trips again (and again). Combine this with some great healthy oil massages, and you will keep on coming back.

The rich history of Kerala arises at the Ayurveda Spa, Ayurmana, which is dedicated to this ancient science of healing. The traditional mansion which houses the Spa, was owned for centuries by a renowned family of Ayurvedic practictioners. The multicusine restaurant, Ettukettu, is an even grander mansion with a pedigree to match: It was commissioned by the King Marthanda Varma for his martial arts maestro, in appreciation of his services, and the mansion belonged to the family for over a century.

The best thing about cruising in the houseboat, other than the beautiful view of course, is the great seafood. We started out with a great appetizer in the form of fried Clams (Note that these are not batter fried, but fried directly in oil with spices). Then came the special treat .. we found a local fisherman (on the lake) trying to sell his catch before evening. Boy, what a catch it was. These were by far the largest prawns I have ever seen in my lifetime. For 1.5 Kg, we got about 4 prawns (thats close to 400 gms per prawn!)

Summer: Max 35, Min 22.5;
Winter: Max 32, Min 22.
Rainfall : 254 cms.
Best Season : October to May.
STD Code : 0477

Alleppey is famously known as the ‘Venice of East’ because of its vast water network. It is located 64km north of Kochi in Kerala. Alleppey is also known as Alappuzha (the local language, Malayalam name for Alleppey). Why the water like term of Venice ? Well, Alleppey is surrounded by the Arabian sea on the west and a vast network of lakes, lagoons and fresh water rivers crisscross it. The large network of canals provides Alleppey its lifeline, proving to be a great transportation network. It has a spectacular long sandy beach.
But when Raja Kesavadasan, the Dewan of Travancore (king), founded the town in 1762, there was just one canal through the strip of sand between the backwaters and the sea. This soon grew into a bustling waterway, with shops, factories and commercial establishments springing up on either bank of the canal. This attracted merchants from other parts of the country and from outside, making this a thriving business location.
By the mid-19th Century, the sea had receded a mile, offering more land along the sand strip. Trading vessels soon began to call on Alleppey (Alappuzha). In 1859 the first organized coir factory & products was started here and began producing matting from coir yarn on a loom developed by an English sea captain. Soon other British company -owned weaving establishments followed.

Mapmyindia map of Alleppey:

Alleppey is also known for its boat races. The most famous of the races is the ‘Nehru Trophy Boat Race’ (named after the first Indian Prime Minister) which began in 1952 on the occasion of the visit of India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, to Alleppey. The boat race is now a regular major (tourist wise) event held on the second Saturday of every August and features the gigantic snake-boats of Kerala, the chundans, (once the battleships of the Malayalee kings from times past). Competition is severe as the boats, with over 120 rowers in each, race to the finish to the accompaniment of rousing music. Each boat is sponsored by a different village and winning the race is a matter of great pride for these villages.
A grand annual festival is celebrated at the unique ‘Nagaraja Temple’ here in October/November. ‘Chirappu Mahotsavam’ is a big occasion at Mullackal Temple in December. Another festival celebrated by the temple is a one-day Thaipooyan kavadi. The famous Chandanakudam is celebrated at the Kidangam-Parampu Temple during December every year. Kottamkulangara Temple in Alappuzha have two festive seasons in February and March, because of two deities with separate flag masts in same compound wall.
For tourists Alleppey(Alappuzha) is the pivotal point for trips into Kerala’s famed backwaters (houseboats & motor boats) and the state’s lush rice bowl, Kuttanad. Between Quilon to the south and Kottayam to the east lie some of the most entrancing scenery of palm-lined banks, islands, quiet water-bound villages and little boats taking the local people to and fro-everything framed in green.
A glide in a “Kettuvallam” (Houseboat) through the enchanting backwaters of Alleppey is sure to rob your heart. Palm fringed narrow canals winding through the vast expanse of paddy fields and the neat tiny hamlets lined up along either sides of the canals are panoramic sights one can never forget. The Chinese fishing nets, the reminiscent of our past trade links, are also found on the way. Flocks of ducks swimming around the banks and tiny birds flying across the sky remains as enduring pictures reflecting the charm of this unique land.
