Sun City is a luxury casino and resort which is located in the North West Province of South Africa.

Overview of Sun City

• The geographic location of Sun City is located between Elands River and Pilanesberg and is approximately 2 hrs from Johannesburg by car.
• Rustenburg is the city near to this resort.
• The complex borders the Pilanesberg Game Reserve.
• Sol Kerzner developed Sun City and is part of Sun International group.
• It was officially opened on 7 December 1979.
• Earlier it was located in the Bantustan of Bophuthatswana which was announced as an independent state.
• It is a relatively close location to the large metropolitan areas of Pretoria and Johannesburg.
• It is a popular holiday and weekend destination.
• It has a large auditorium known as Sun City Superbowl which has the capacity of approximately 6,230.
• Many heavyweight boxing matches were held in Sun City in around 1970s and early 1980s.
• IIFA awards was held in Sun City in 2001.

• The resort has four hotels:
1. Sun City Hotel
2. Cascades Hotel
3. The Cabanas
4. The Palace of the Lost City
• The complex includes time-share facilities called “The Sun City Vacation Club”.
• It is a popular self-catering facility.

Golf in Sun City

• The design of golf can challenge every level of player.
• It has two international-standard 18-hole golf courses known as Gary Player Country Club and the Lost City Golf Course which are designed by Gary Player.
• The Gary Player Country Club is home to the prestigious Nedbank Golf Challenge which is held annually.
• The Lost City Golf Course is noted for the 38 crocodiles in the water feature of the 13th hole.
• Various kind of events like Miss South Africa Pegeant were held in The Sun City resort.
• Miss World Pageant were also held for five times from 1992-1995 and 2001.
• They take place in Sun City’s Super Bowl Arena and the Valley of Waves.

• Water world is located at the man-made Sun City Lake. It offers:

Valley of the Waves
• The Valley of the Waves is located at Sun City’s Lost City.
• Valley of the Waves is certainly South Africa’s most advanced Water Park.
• It is one of the major resorts.
• This is a mechanically-generated wave pool.
• It has an artificial beach. It features:
– a large wave pool: generates 1.8meter waves every 90 minutes
– a sandy beach
– a number of exciting flume rides

Best time to visit / climate

• South Africa has a temperate climate.
• There’s no best time to visit Sun City.
• The warm temperatures make it a great year-round destination.
• Country’s summer season can get very busy at Sun City.
• A calmer Sun City holiday can be had outside of the peak seasons.
• Winter months are less crowded.
• Temperatures range from 17° to 31 °C (62° to 88 °F) in the summer.
• Temperatures range from 3° to 21 °C (37° to 70 °F) in the winter.
• Annual rainfall totals about 360 mm (about 14 in).
• Almost all of it falls during the summer months.
• Summer months are between October and April.

How to get there?

• There are no direct flights to Sun City.
• Visitors would fly to Johannesburg first or rent a vehicle, board a bus or hop onto a Sun City transfer.
• The Sun City resort is only two and a half hours outside Johannesburg.
• Visitors can catch a bus from either Pretoria or Johannesburg.
• Sun City transfers are by far the quickest and easiest way to reach the Sun City resort from Johannesburg.
• Sun City transfers allow you to sit back and enjoy the passing scenery.

To reach northwest
By car
• The N12 highway runs from Kimberley trough the eastern part of the province (Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom) to Johannesburg.
• The N14 from Upington joins the N12 in Wolmaranstaad.
• The N4 runs through the north of the province.
• It comes from Gaborone in Botswana, goes through Zeerust and Rustenburg and from there to the north of Pretoria.

By plane
• The airport of Pilanesberg/Sun City offers flights to Johannesburg.
• The capital city of Mmabatho/Mafikeng has regular flights operated by South African Airways to Johannesburg.

By bus
Greyhound and Translux offer bus connections from other provinces.
