Travel – Malia – a coastal town and a tourist attraction in Crete in Greece




Malia is a coastal town and a tourist Mecca in Crete. It is a municipality on the island of Crete in Greece. It is about 34km to the east of Heraklion and has a population of about 3,700. It is to the north east corner of Heraklion prefecture. The villages of Mochos, Krassi and Stalis come under this municipality. The land area is about 60 square km. This town is an archaeological site and the Minoan town ruins can also be seen to about 3km to the east. This town has a nice sandy beach. To the east is a Minoan palace of Malia.

Attractions of Malia:
• The Cretan Malia Park: This is a hotel on a sandy beach bay. There is an oasis of marble and stone with green gardens of palms, wild figs, hibiscus, cacti and olive trees.
• Kyknos Beach: Kyknos is about 32kms to the east of the airport of Heraklion and is located between Malia and Stalida.
• Malia Studios: This is a sandy beach which is very beautiful next to the Cretan Sea. It is an oldest tourist attraction.
• The old town: This town has both old and modern areas. The old town has alleys with taverns, shops and others.
• The Minoan Palace of Malia: This is about 3 kms to the east of the town. It is known to be the third largest Minoan palace that is in Crete. The surroundings are beautiful with sea and the road links to eastern and central Crete. This palace dates back to 1900 BC. Minos’ brother Sarpedon is known to have constructed it.
• Water parks: There are two big water parks Aqua Splash and Star Beach at Malia. The chutes, tubes, white knuckle slides and river rides of the water park entertain family and individuals equally. Bungees jumping to bumper cars are also available.
• Aqua World: This is a museum in Hersonissos, Heraklion in Crete. This is to the west end of Hersonissos and about 30km to the east of Heraklion and to about 40km to the west of Agios Nikolaos. There are animals on display in their natural habitat.
• Kolokytha Peninsula: Lying to the east of Malia. One can snorkel near the causeway.
• Islet of Ayioi Pantes: This Island is home to about 200 curly-horned wild Cretan goats that are special to this place, Crete.
• Crete Golf Club: It is on a rolling landscape and is about half an hour from Heraklion airport.
• Jeep Safari: This safari takes one to beaches and coastlines of Preveli and the mountainous gorges of Crete and into the mountains of Lassithi where one can visit the cave of Zeus, visit Eco Village which is famous for traditional arts and crafts.
• Agios Nikolaos (or Aghios Nikolaos) is a city or a coastal town on the island of Greek of Crete. The city lies to the east of the capital, Heraklion and to the north of lerapetra and to the west of sitia. This town is the capital of Lasithi. The three faces to the sea of this town are The Lake & port, Kitroplatia beach and the Marina.

Beaches:
• Ammos (sandy public beach by the marina)
• Kitroplatia is the town centre (shingle & sand) beach.
• Ammoudi and Havania beaches (on the way to Elounda).
• Almiros & Ammoudara (sandy beaches with organized facilities, about 2.5 km east of Agios Nikolaos)
• Istron/Kalo Horio – 2 good beaches (10 km)
• Elounda small sandy beach (10 km)
• Plaka pebble beach (16 km).
• Chrissi Island: For quiet presence of palm trees and soothing watered sandy beaches one can take a boat trip from here to Chrissi Island. This is one of the uninhabited islands of the Crete. It is about 8 miles from Ierapetra. The island has blue-green sea, sandy beaches, cedar forest on the sand hills and colorful volcanic rock. This island is about 5km in length and of a height 10m.

Best time to visit / climate:

The best time to visit this place is in summer. The temperatures are ideal from July to August.

How to get there:
Malia is about 40 km from Heraklion with a regular bus service.
Agios Nikolaos (Crete) is about 40 miles from Herakleion Airport (HER). The journey takes about 45 – 60 minutes by car or taxi.
By Bus: There are local bus services available in the place.
By Ferry:
Ferry services run to Agios Nikolaos from Athens (Piraeusport), Rhodes, Chalki, Karpathos and Kassos.
Major ferry lines operate to the port of Herakleion with buses connecting at the main bus station near to the port. Ferries run directly to the town via LANE lines from Pireaus and Rhodes.
By plane: The distance is 40 miles from Heraklion airport to Agios Nikolaos.
Getting around:
By Bus: Elounda, Kritsa, Sitia, Heraklion (and from there, Knossos), Malia and Hersonnisos are accessed with a regular bus service.
Among others are taxis, scooters, rent car facilities available in the place.
