Malana Village Trek is one of the popular Trekking spots in Himachal near Chandra Khanni Pass.


• Malana is a tribal village.
• It is considered as the oldest democracy in the world.
• The trek ends at the Baralacha Pass on the Manali-Leh road.
• It leads one through picturesque and pleasing landscape, birch forests, rhododendron bushes, and lush meadows.
• The trek provides with awe-inspiring views.
• The trek traverses from the snow-capped Dhaula Dhar in the south, to Hanuman Tibba at the head of the Solang Valley and the Ghalpo peaks in Lahaul.
• The appropriate periods to visit this are, March to June and May to Nov.
• The permission must be obtained from the head of the villagers to visit the important places in the village.
• There are nearly 1100 persons in the village.
• The people of Malana are rough and tough.
• Visit Rumsu, which is located in Kullu.

• It is situated on the Beas river bank in the lower reaches of Himalayas.

General Itinerary of the Trek

1. Manali – Naggar – Rumsu 2378 meter
• Drive from Manali to Naggar.
• The distance is 25 kms by jeep.
• The trek will start from Naggar to Rumsu.
• Stay overnight in a camp near Rumsu village.

2. Rumsu – Chanderkhani base camp (6 hrs) ht. 2400 meter
• Trek will start for the Chanderkhani base camp.
• Walk up to the base camp via a forest of oak, popular, pine, meadow of wild flowers and Rhododendron bushes.
• Overnight stay at Chanderkhani base in camps.

3. Base camp – Chanderkhani pass (ht. 3660 miter.) – Malana (5-6 hrs)
• The trek will start to Malana village via Chanderkhani pass.
• The village is set out from the rest of Kullu valley.
• Malana is a tribal village.

4. Malana – Jari (5-6 hrs)
• Explore Malana village.
• From here we start trekking to Jari.
• Drive the way back to Manali.

What does the package includes?

Equipment: guest tent, mattress, sleeping bags, kitchen tent and all kitchen equipments.
Staff: experienced English speaking guide, cook, porters or ponies.
Food: all meals (morning tea, breakfast, packed lunch and dinner).
Others: First aid medical kit.

Outline of the Itinerary

Day-1 Arrival Manali (2950 mts) and acclimatisation walk around Manali.
Day-2 Drive from Manali to Naggar and trek to Rumsu village (2377 mts) on the way stop at Rorich Art gallery, camp at Rumsu.
Day-3 Rumsu- Chanderkhani (3960 mts-8km), a striking view of Deo Tibba overlooking the view of Malana glen.
Day-4 Chanderkani- Malana (2617 mts- 7 km)
Day-5 Malana- Rashol (2598 mts- 19 km)
Day-6 Rashol- Kasol (1585 mts- 8 km)
Day-7 Kasol- Manikaran and back to Manali

• The climate in Manali is predominantly cold during winters, and moderately cool during summers.
• The temperatures range from 4 °C (39 °F) to 30 °C (86 °F) over the year.
• The average temperature during summer is between 14 °C (57 °F) and 20 °C (68 °F), and between ?7 °C (19 °F) and 10 °C (50 °F) in the winter.
• Monthly precipitation varies between 31 mm (1.2 in) in November to 217 mm (8.5 in) in July.
• In average, some 45 mm (1.8 in) of precipitation is received during winter and spring months.
• The average total annual precipitation is 1,363 mm (53.7 in).
• Snowfall in the region, takes place in the month of December.

How to get there?
1. By Air
• The nearest airport (IATA code KUU) is at Bhuntar town.
• It is situated on NH21 about 50 km (31 mi) south of Manali and 10 km (6.2 mi) south of Kullu town.
• The airport is also known as Kullu-Manali airport and has more than a kilometre long runway.
• Indian Airlines and some private airlines have regular flights to the airport.
• Chandigarh airport is the nearest large airport.

2. By Road
• Manali can be reached from Delhi by national highway NH 1 up to Chandigarh.
• From there by national highway NH21 that passes through Bilaspur, Sundernagar, Mandi and Kullu towns.
• The road distance from Delhi to Chandigarh is 248 km and from Chandigarh to Manali is 273 km.
• The total distance from Delhi to Manali thus is 521 km (324 mi).

3. By Rail
• Manali is not easily approachable by rail.
• The nearest broad gauge railheads are at Chandigarh (275 km (171 mi)), Pathankot (325 km (202 mi)) and Kalka (310 km (193 mi)).
• The nearest narrow gauge railhead is at Joginder Nagar (135 kilometres (84 mi)).
