Travel – Ierapetra – a city in Crete and the southernmost town in Europe

Ierapetra is a city in Crete. It is the southernmost town in Europe with some of the highest temperatures in Greece, and also one of the most productive farming towns in Greece.

Attractions of Ierapetra:
• Walk with Donkeys Sanctuary: This is a sanctuary for unwanted, injured and abused donkeys that is located below the village of Anatoli. There are donkey rides for children. There are farm visits to let visitors watch donkeys and other animals.
• Kales: This is on the side of the old town called Serakina. It was built by the pirate Pescatore in 1212 and depicts Ierapetra’s history.
• Mosque: This is an old mosque from early Islamic times. There is a fountain called Krini; and the mosque is a music school.
• Napoleon’s residence: This is the remains of the Old Cretan house which is in the old town. Here Napoleon resided in July 1798.
• The archaeological collection: There is a school built in 1899 called the Ottomon School for Turkish children. Presently, it is an archaeological site with exhibits of various periods. Among the exhibits are ritual pots and other vessels, jars, axes, a clay potter’s wheel, the Episkopi sarcophagus and the statue of the goddess Persefoni.
• The folklore museum of Vainia: This is a museum representing folk art and is a cultural association.
• The church of Afentis Christos: It is the oldest church of the town that dates back to 14th century. There are icons and wooden iconostasis that are carved and beautiful.
• The church of Panagitsa: “Panagia” (the Virgin) is a town opposite to the fort where this church that is quite famous is located. It is known to be a single aisled church. The “Entrance of the Virgin into the Temple” celebration takes place here every 21st of November.
• The church of St. John: This is located in the old town and dates back to 17th century. It was converted to a mosque by the Turks.
• The chapel of Agios Georgios and Agios Haralampos: This is a monument that was built in 961 A.C. and located in Episkopi village. This monument has great historical and cultural significance.
• Panagia Vriomenou monastery: This monastery is built on the significance of the birth of Holly Mother, in 1577 A.D.
• Exacousti monastery: This monastery has beautiful surroundings. It is in middle of a pine forest and is near the Males village.
• Vasiliki: This is a Minoan site that is located on a hill on the northern end of Ierapetra isthmus near the Vasiliki village. It is a Minoan village which was in use during their period.
• Simi: This is a sanctuary that is on the southern side of Mount Dikte. This mountain is at an altitude of 1200 meters above sea level and is above Kato Simi village. It has good views of the south coast.
• Selakano forest: This is a forest core of wild pine that is in the Mediterranean with natural interests, traditional agricultural cultivation, cattle – raising, apiculture.
• Chrissi Island: For enjoying the quiet presence of palm trees and soothing watered sandy beaches, one can take a boat trip from here to Chrissi Island. This is one of the uninhabited islands of the Crete. It is about 8 miles from Ierapetra. The island has blue-green sea, sandy beaches, cedar forest on the sand hills and colorful volcanic rock. This island is about 5km in length and of a height of 10m.
• The gorge of Ha: It is located about 8 km. to the north of Ierapetra. This place has many species of Cretan flora and fauna. This gorge is about 500m long and 400m deep.
• The gorge of Sarakina: This gorge is full of beauty with pine trees, small waterfalls and rare species of Cretan fauna.

• The gorge of Mesonas: This is in Kavousi village with many species of flora special in Crete.
• Theriospilio cave: This cave is near the Kavousi village and is famous for having stalactites and stalagmites.
• Chrysi: This is a beach where one can relax and swim.
• Agios Nikolaos (or Aghios Nikolaos) is a city or a coastal town on the island of Greek of Crete. The city lies to the east of the capital, Heraklion and to the north of lerapetra and to the west of sitia. This town is the capital of Lasithi. The three faces to the sea of this town are The Lake & port, Kitroplatia beach and the Marina.

• Ammos (sandy public beach by the marina)
• Kitroplatia is the town centre (shingle & sand) beach.
• Ammoudi and Havania beaches (on the way to Elounda).
• Almiros & Ammoudara (sandy beaches with organized facilities, about 2.5 km east of Agios Nikolaos)
• Istron/Kalo Horio – 2 good beaches (10 km),
• Elounda small sandy beach (10 km)
• Plaka pebble beach (16 km).

Best time to visit / climate:

The best time to visit this place is in summer. The temperatures are ideal from July to August.

How to get there:
Ierapetra is in the south of Lassithi Prefecture. One can get there in own or a rented car or by KTEL intercity bus from Heraklion or Agios Nikolaos.
Agios Nikolaos (Crete) is about 40 miles from Herakleion Airport (HER). The journey takes about 45 – 60 minutes by car or taxi.
By Bus: There are local bus services available in the place.
By Ferry:
Ferry services run to Agios Nikolaos from Athens (Piraeusport), Rhodes, Chalki, Karpathos and Kassos.
Major ferry lines operate to the port of Herakleion with buses connecting at the main bus station near to the port. Ferries run directly to the town via LANE lines from Pireaus and Rhodes.
By plane: The distance is 40 miles from Heraklion airport to Agios Nikolaos.
Getting around:
By Bus: Elounda, Kritsa, Sitia, Heraklion (and from there, Knossos), Malia and Hersonnisos are accessed with a regular bus service.
Among others are taxis, scooters, rent car facilities available in the place.
