Travel – Engelberg, also known as the Mountain of Angels

Engelberg is in the canton of Obwalden in Switzerland. It is a village that comprises of population of 3,721, and Engelberg has an area of 74.8 square kilometers (28.9 sq mi). Engelberg is also named the ‘Mountain of Angels’. The name “Engelberg” originates from the foundation of the Benedictine monastery as it is said that the singing voices of angels gave Engelberg its name. Engelberg is situated at an altitude of 3020 meters above sea level. Engelberg’s culture goes back to the 12th century. The village is characterized by the monastery and the monastery church. This place also is a mountain resort, Urner Alps and is in central Switzerland. Skiing is the popular most sport here. From October till end of May, the place is open for skiing. This place has alpines surrounded and is known for its modern sports facilities.
An impressive library, the museum of Engelberg, the manor house and the Cheese Factory are all the popular spots to be visited. The closest large cities are Lucerne and Zurich. The lifts and cable cars operate all through the year. This place is ideal for both summer and winter activities. Walking, cycling, hiking, mountaineering, skiing, sledging, paragliding through the mountain air, river rafting, canyoning, biking. Playing in18-hole golf course etc., are the wide range of activities included for the tour. One can also go for Nordic walking, winter walking as well as in a horse-drawn carriage or sleigh.
Engelberg is known for off-piste tours. Titlis and Jochpass are the accessible lift-served ski areas. On the contrary side of the valley, Brunni, which is also a ski area, is located, ideal for beginners. By using cableway, The Titlis, Engelberg’s ‘house mountain’, and its glacier park can be seen. This location is just right for viewing the Central Alps. The main sights of Engelberg are Mount Titlis, Mount “Hahnen”, Engelberg Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in the Swiss Congregation, the museum of the valley, the hotel Europäischer Hof and a number of old chapels. Engelberg is also famous for the ski jumping world cup.

• FIS world cup ski jumping in Engelberg. – The only world cup ski jumping event of the season in Switzerland is held in Engelberg.

Places to see:
• Titlis: it is the highest glacier destination and the biggest ski and snowboard point in Central Switzerland. The Titlis Glacier Park and ‘Ice Flyer’ chairlift are situated at an altitude of 3000 meters above sea level. One can glide down as well down the slopes. Ice walking is also another option along with skiing. It is a snowboard paradise in Central Switzerland that can be accessed by a cableway.
• Mountain flower trail, tickle trail, Knapp trail: These are theme trails to explore country side by foot.
• Trübsee: This is located midway up Titlis. It leads to many mountain lakes.
• Engelberg Monastery – It has the biggest church organ in Switzerland and has a college library, Valley Museum and exhibition cheese diary that are the most important attractions of the monastery.
• Four-lake-tour – It is a magnificent tour from mirror-smooth Lake Trüb to deep blue Lake Engstlen, on to turquoise Lake Tannen all the way to Lake Melch.
• Brunni Trail – It has twelve information boards regarding the nature and life of humans and animals in the mountains.

How to get there:

One can take a flight to Zurich and reach Engelberg from Zurich by train or car. It will take about half an hour to reach Engelberg by car. If you travel by train you can take one from Lucerne which will take you directly to Engelberg. The trains leave on every hour and are operated by the Zentralbahn. There are also other Intercity or Eurocity trains from Lucerne.
By car one can reach Engelberg. From Geneva one can take a motorway through Bern. One can travel along the Gotthard road – from St. Gallen, through Zurich and Lucerne. From Lucerne one should take the A2 motorway and leave it at the Stans-Süd exit in order to reach Engelberg.

Engelberg is a summer and winter holiday paradise.
